Paintball Vocabulary
Paintball is basically an adult version of “Capture the Flag”. The object is to capture the opposing team’s flag while trying to protect your team’s flag. During all of this you must eliminate the opposing players by tagging them with a paintball. For some people, paintball is just a fun game to play every now and then, but for others it’s taken very seriously. Many die hard players even use their own Paintball Lingo. Some Paintball Vocabulary includes:
ACE- (Anti-Chop Eye) – An infrared “eye” system used to detect the presence of a paintball in the breech to avoid chops. Can be a multi part break-beam system with a transmitter on one side and receiver on the other or an all-in-one transmitter/receiver which reflects light off the paint.
Bunker- A place, object or embankment on the field that players use for cover.
Cover Fire- Shooting rapidly at the opposing teams bunker so your teammate can easily move.
Dead Box- The place where a player goes after they are eliminated. Each team usually starts the game (Breaks) from their dead box.
Dead Man Walk- A player who looks like they are walking towards the dead box after being eliminated, but is not actually out of the game. At some point of this walk they will dive into a bunker or start shooting opposing players.
Eyes- Electronics that are used to detect whether paint is in the breech. There is a transmitter located on one side and a receiver on the other, called break-beam or reflective system.
Flank- The extreme left or right side of an army, fleet or team. To attach someone far left or right. This included coming from behind)
Gogged- Getting hit in the goggles by a paintball.
Hopper- Feeds paintballs into the gun by either agitation, gravity or force-feed.
Pinch- When a player puts their opponent in a position on the field where they cannot move without being shot.
Pods- Containers that hold extra paint you may need for a game. They typically hold 100 paintballs.
Raking- A way of activating the paintball gun trigger in which you move 1 or 2 fingers over the trigger. You lose accuracy, but it is faster than walking the trigger. It can only be used on a trigger that has a hump in the middle.
Remote- Fittings and hoses which allow the tank (Co2 or HPA) to detach from the intended location on the gun, then located elsewhere, like in the players pack.
Shootdown- When the recharge rate of the pneumatics is slower than the rate of fire, when you’re firing rapidly. The velocity of each shot will lower according to the pressure the pneumatics can sustain under that certain speed of fire.
Walking The Trigger- Alternating your index and middle fingers to depress a double trigger, repeatedly. You will realize why its called walking if you do it. Walking the Trigger is the best technique for accuracy and fast firing.
